History

The word Canada comes from Huron-Iroquois Kanaka that signifies town or establishment, and it was utilized by Jacques Cartier in his expeditions.  The history of this great country goes back 5 000 years B.C. with the presence of indigenous in the east of Canada.  Three tribes shared the land until the arrival of the French and English expeditions: the Inuit, the Iroquois and the Algonquians.  The first explorer who navigated the waters of the Saint Lawrence River, trying to find a route to China by command of the king of France, was Jacques Cartier in 1534.  In the course of the following 50 years, several other explorations took place, but it was until 1608 that Champlain founded the first establishment: the city of Quebec

During the next 100 years, after several explorations performed by the English and French, they founded new establishments which today is all the Canadian territory. On July 1st, 1867, the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, united to create a new country, and in time, other provinces and territories annexed themselves.

Canada is a confederation officially created with the adoption of the British North- America Act.  The maple leaf is the symbol that represents the country

Geography

Canada has a surface of 10 million square kilometers and its population is approximately of 31 million people. The majority concentrates on the south of the country.  Its coasts are bathed by the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, and north, by the Arctic Ocean.

The country’s topography is crossed by several mountain chains.  Near two million lakes are widespread along the territory and they average 7.6% of the continental mass.  The Saint Lawrence River’s length is of 3.058 kilometers, and it is Canada’s most important river because it opens the way to the Atlantic Ocean to the ships that come from the Great Lakes.

Political division

Canada is divided into five regions, and at the same time are subdivided in 10 provinces and three territories.  Each province and each territory have its capital city, with the greater national capital, Ottawa.

The Central Region.  The provinces of Ontario and Quebec, conform this region located at the east-center side of the country, thanks to their great mineral resources, Canada is one of the first producers in the world of gold, silver, nickel, zinc, copper and iron.

Ontario is the most populated Canadian province, with eleven million inhabitants approximately.  Along the history of Canada, this province has become the strongest economical province in the country due to the size of its population, to the wealth of its resources and to its privileged geographical situation.

Quebec is the largest Province of Canada, highly industrialized with a diversified economy. Its average population is of seven million inhabitants. Three quarters of the population are French-speaking.  This province strongly endeavors to protect and promote the language and culture of its French-speaking population.

The Prairies.  The provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta form this region that is well known by the fertility of their agricultural lands and the wealth of their energy resources.  Almost half of the energy consumed by Canada, stems from the petroleum and of the natural gas of this region, being the main producer of these fuels. Alberta exports an important amount of coal.  Saskatchewan produces petroleum, natural gas, uranium and potash in large quantities.  Manitoba has approximately 100.000 lakes and is the largest producer of hydroelectricity of the prairies.

The Western Coast.  Situated at the Pacific Ocean, British Columbia is well known by the majesty of its mountains.  Three large mountainous chains cross this province: the Rocky mountains, the chain Columbia and the Coastal chain.  This province has an approximate population of 4 million inhabitants.  Its forest industry is on the top; for which, near half of their manufactured goods are made of wood (wood for construction, paper and wood pulp products).  Tourism is in second place in province’s economy.  The natural beauty of the Pacific Coast and the Rocky mountains attract each year thousands of tourists that love fishing, outdoor walks, camping and to snow skiing.

The Atlantic Region.  This region is conformed by the provinces of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick.

The North Coast.  The province of Newfoundland Labrador has one of the greater maritime coasts in the world.  This Province was adhered to the Confederation in 1949.

Territories.  Yukon, Nunavut and the North-Western Territories are located at the north of the American continent.
